Pocket and travel diaries, 1847 and 1887, kept by lithographer Brewster Maverick of New York City. Pocket diary, 1847, records Maverick's daily activities such as going to the theater, socializing with friends, studying law in the office of David M. Cowdrey, and working as an assistant in his uncle's print shop distributing type and printing up and delivering bills of fare to New York hotels and restaurants. Brief entries note current events, titles of theatrical productions attended along with names of lead performers, personal activities, family news, etc. Also included are recipes for novel recreational experiments. Travel diary, May 1887-Aug. 1887, written by Maverick while visiting Spain, Tangiers, France, Italy, London, and various locations in southern Europe, records his observations on the customs, clothing, and scenery of the places visited; including descriptions of local architecture, geography, cuisine, a bullfight in Spain, and travel conditions encountered en route. Maverick traveled in the company of his wife on the "Germanic," returning on the ship "Celtic." Also included are lists of correspondents with the dates of letters sent and received, names and addresses of contacts and associates, and miscellaneous travel accounts.
